TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING

Professional Bachelor level programme

Aims of the study programme:

  • To provide students with a set of knowledge, skills and competence in translation according to the 6th level of the framework defined in the Latvian education classification.
  • Educating interpreters and translators who are competitive in the labour market, can adapt to its changing demands, are able to improve their qualifications, both in fulfilling their professional responsibilities, and by continuing education on the next stages of education.

Study programme objectives:

  • Provide a study process that complies with the laws and requirements of the labour market, as well as student-centred approach in higher education.
  • To promote qualification development of the teaching staff in educational and scientific fields.
  • To provide and develop research activities in the study programme.
  • To provide and develop infrastructure and facilities under the study programme implementation needs.
  • To develop international collaboration with related higher education institutions, enterprises and organizations.

Learning outcomes of the study programme:

Knowledge (knowledge and understanding)

  • Knows modern translation methods and terminology.
  • Knows the requirements for formatting the texts to be translated according to the requirements of the regulatory acts.

Skills(ability to apply knowledge, communication skills, general skills)

  • Is able to translate the English text, business correspondence, institutional documentation, legal, medical, marketing, etc. documents into Latvian.
  • Can use translation techniques according to the type of text to be translated, customer setup and target audience needs.
  • Is able to carry out studies on current issues of translation.
  • Is able to present the results of the conducted research.
  • Is able to independently organise their work.
  • Is able to work in a team

Competence (analysis, synthesis, evaluation)

  • Can analyse and use translation industry research and new technologies.
  • Is able to solve topical terminology problems in the target language.
