BUSINESS ECONOMICS

Do you want to become a business strategist who is oriented towards both local and global markets?

Business economics is not just about numbers – it is the art of understanding market trends, making informed decisions, and leading companies towards sustainable growth. In this program, you will learn the skills necessary to analyse economic processes, plan business development, and manage resources effectively.

This program is suitable for those who value economic logic, analytical thinking, and the desire to influence the business environment both in Latvia and globally. Whether you are passionate about financial analysis, international trade, or business management, business economics will allow you to develop your strengths.

Degree to Be Achieved: Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics

Accreditation: Study programme is accredited until July 1, 2027.

 

What will you learn?

  • Economic theory and analysis: Microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and statistics.
  • Business principles: Accounting, financial analysis, business economics, and planning.
  • International economics: Globalization, trade, commercial diplomacy, and international law.
  • Management and logistics skills: Management science, logistics economics, procurement, and warehouse management.
  • Communication and foreign languages: English, professional foreign language I and II, communication psychology.
  • Research skills: History of economic thought, research work organization, bachelor′s thesis.

 

What will you do?

  • Analyse economic processes: Conduct research on the economic processes of the company and the national economy using various methods and information and communication technologies.
  • Make informed decisions: Use the information obtained to make decisions about the company′s operations.
  • Work in a team and independently: You will organize your work and work in a team to achieve common goals.
  • Present research results: You will be able to discuss economic processes and current events in the company and the economy in a reasoned manner.

 

Where can you do an internship?

You will have the opportunity to gain international experience by participating in ERASMUS+ programs and going on an internship abroad, for which you will receive a scholarship.

Computer and software requirements

To successfully complete the study programme, students are required to have a laptop suitable for working with economics, finance and data analysis tools. Appropriate technical equipment enables students to process and analyze data, evaluate business and market trends, prepare reports and presentations, and carry out study projects from the first semester.

 

1. Technical requirements for a laptop

  • Screen size: not less than 14"
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 (13th generation) or AMD Ryzen 5/7, or equivalent
  • Graphics card: integrated Intel UHD Graphics or AMD Radeon Graphics
  • Memory (RAM): at least 16 GB
  • Storage: 512 GB SSD
  • Network: Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
  • Connectivity: at least one USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) port or newer
  • Battery life: minimum 6 hours according to the manufacturer′s specifications
  • Alternatively, an Apple MacBook with an Apple Silicon M-series processor and at least 16 GB RAM

2. Required software

Software to be installed before the start of studies:

Learning outcomes of the study programme

Aims of the study programme:

  • To provide students with a set of knowledge, skills and competence in business economics according to the 6th level of the framework defined in the Latvian education classification.
  • Educate specialists in business economics with analytical and systemic thinking, whose knowledge and skills enable analysing and planning economic processes.

Study programme objectives:

  • Provide a study process that complies with the laws and requirements of the labour market, as well as student-centred approach in higher education.
  • To promote qualification development of the teaching staff in educational and scientific fields.
  • To provide and develop research activities in the study programme.
  • To provide and develop infrastructure and facilities under the study programme implementation needs.
  • To develop international collaboration with related higher education institutions, enterprises and organizations.

Outcomes of the study programme:

Knowledge (knowledge and understanding)

  • Knows and understands the regularities of the economic theory.
  • Knows and understands the principles of the company’s activities and business performance indicators.

Skills(ability to apply knowledge, communication skills, general skills)

  • Is able to plan business activity using data on economic processes.
  • Is able to carry out research on economic processes at the enterprise and in economy and interpret their results.
  • Is able to present the results of the conducted research.
  • Is able to reasonably discuss economic processes and current events at the enterprise and in economy.
  • Is able to independently organise their work.
  • Is able to work in a team

Competence (analysis, synthesis, evaluation)

  • Is able to acquire and analyse information using a variety of methods and ICT.
  • Is able to use various types of information in decision-making about the activities of the enterprise.
  • Is able to find solutions to the problems identified during the research or analysis of the company performance.

Where to Work?

Graduates of the EKA University of Applied Sciences (EKA) are able to sustain the highest level of competition in labour markets in Latvia and the European Union. Where to Continue Studies/International Studies:

After graduating from the EKA students are able to continue studies at Master degree programmes in Latvia and other countries. That is possible due to international students exchange projects.

The EKA has concluded ERASMUS cooperation agreements with higher educational institutions in France, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Germany, and Hungary. Every year list of the EKA University of Applied Sciences partners is expanded with new partners. Every year students and lecturers participate in exchange programmes.
