The first English academic competition for students from Latvia′s secondary schools "ENGLISH GURU 2016" took place in the University of Economics and Culture. Participants of the competition were students from 11th and 12th grades from more than 60 secondary schools, professional schools, and vocational secondary schools.

Among more than 200 participants, the winner is Dinnija Innusa from Riga State Gymnasium No.3. The second place is taken by Kaiva Caunite from Akniste Secondary School, the third - by Kitija Lucina Gristina from Auce Secondary School.

The competition was organized by the EKA University in cooperation with Alberta College (AC) and Pearson Central Europe Representative Office in Latvia. Winners received prizes from the University of Economics and Culture and Alberta College - tuition fee discount and other prizes. Annija Jansone from Druva Secondary School of Saldus region received special prize of the competition from the sponsor Pearson Central Europe Representative Office in Latvia.

In the first round of the competition, that occurred as extramural tour, competed more than 200 students; however, the second tour took place in the EKA University - participants had to interpret the task and participate in discussion on translations in Latvian. 56 students from 29 schools took part in the second tour.

Organizers of the competition thank all teachers who worked with students to prepare them for the competition. In the second tour of the English Guru participated students from following schools: Akniste Secondary School, Auce Secondary School, Bauska State Gymnasium, Gulbene Region State Gymnasium, Jaunpiebalga Secondary School, Jelgava Secondary School No.4, Jelgava Spidola Gymnasium, Jelgava State Gymnasium, Cirava Structural Unit of Kandava Agricultural Technical School, Kuldiga Secondary School of Art and Humanities, Limbaži Secondary School No.3, Piltene Secondary School, Priekule Secondary School, Rezekne State Gymnasium No.1, Riga Evening (Shift) Secondary School No.9, Riga Centre Humanitarian Secondary School, Riga Imanta Secondary School, Riga Jugla Secondary School, Riga Lithuanian Secondary School, Riga State Gymnasium No.3, Riga State German Gymnasium, Druva Secondary Schools of Saldus region, Tukums Secondary School No.2, Vilis Pludonis Kuldiga Gymnasium, Vaiņode Secondary School, Valmiera State Gymnasium, Valmiera Viesturs Secondary School, Ventspils Technical School, Ventspils State Gymnasium No.1, Zasa Secondary School.
