On Wednesday, October 29, the EKA University of Applied Sciences hosted a guest lecture by Edīte Grīnvalde, Senior Payments and Financial Market Analyst at Latvijas Banka, titled “Modern Payments. How innovation, technological advancement and digital transformation affects them?”
During the lecture, students learned about the development of the payment landscape in Latvia and across Europe. The session covered the latest trends – instant payments (24/7), payments via mobile phones and smartwatches, softPOS solutions for businesses, and the national security initiative STOP–CHECK–PROTECT. Special attention was given to the upcoming digital euro and new EU regulations that aim to ensure secure, accessible, and innovative payment systems for everyone.
The lecture aimed to familiarize students with real-world financial innovations and demonstrate how modern technology is transforming everyday payment habits.
Participants included master’s students from the “Start-up Management” course (assistant professor Kaspars Šteinbergs) and bachelor’s students from the “Financial Accounting” course (lecturer Laila Kelmere).
